Description
1. General Description

ECTS (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor) located in the engine coolant passage of the cylinder head. It detects the water temperature and relays signals to the ECM. It employs a thermistor, which is sensitive to the changes in the coolant temperature. The electric resistance of a thermistor decreases as the fuel temperature increases, and increases as the fuel temperature decreases. The power source in the ECM is supplied to the ECTS via a resistor in the ECM. The electric resistance of a thermistor decreases in response to the temperature rise. The ECM judges engine coolant temperature by sensor output voltage and provides optimum fuel enrichment when the engine is cold and in order to operate the radiator fan and the A/C condensor fan.

2. DTC Description

If the ECTS is indicating an extremely low or high temperature during two driving cycles or if the ECTS indicates to the ECM a coolant temperature outside the normal operating range or the temperature from the ECTS is considerably lower than the " model " temperature curve as the car warms up, this code will be set

● P 0116 : Error is recognized when the rising time of coolant temperature up to 45℃(113℉) is deviated from below data after the engine starting

① -40°C(-40℉) @3760 sec. ② -20°C(-4℉) @1650 sec.

③ 5.5°C(41.9℉) @1635 sec. ④ 45°C(113℉) @150 sec.

● P 0117 : Output signal < 225 mV

● P 0118 : Output signal > 4.97 V

● LIMP HOME MODE

① Engine temp. is fixed value of 80℃(176℉) after cranking and -25℃(-13℉) when cranking by ECM

② Engine performance is reduced over 120℃(248℉)

③ Radiator cooling fan and A/C condensor fan is operated.

④ Air conditioning system deactivited.

⑤ Water heater deactivited.
