Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness(s) and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage.
Check the following conditions:
Check for damaged harness and terminals: contact resistance, oxidation, bent or broken terminals.
Check for poor connection between ECM and component: backed out terminal, improper mating, broken locks or poor terminal to wire connection
Use a suitable male pin to ensure that contact in sockets is good. The pin should remain in position when pulled gently.
Has a problem been found?
YES
Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure
NO
Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor's and/or PCM's connector or was repaired and PCM memory was not cleared.
If signal circuit is OK, Go to "CHECK TCM " of the "Component Inspection" procedure
CHECK REFERENCE VOTAGE
Turn ignition switch to On position and disconnect INPUT SPEED SENSOR connector
Measure voltage between terminal 2 of the INPUT SPEED SENSOR harness connector and chassis ground
Specification : Approximately 5V
Is voltage within specification ?
YES
Go to "Power circuit Inspection" of the "W/Harness Inspection" procedure
NO
Repair open or short to chassis ground in harness and Go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure
If signal circuit is OK, Go to "PCM Inspection" of the "Component Inspection" procedure
CHECK POWER TO INO
Turn ignition switch to On position and disconnect INPUT SPEED SENSOR connector
Measure voltage between terminal 3 of the INPUT SPEED SENSOR harness connector and chassis ground
Specification : Approximately B+
Is voltage within specification ?
YES
Go to "Ground circuit Inspection" of the "W/Harness Inspection" procedure
NO
Repair open in harness and Go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure
CHECK GROUND CIRCUIT
Turn ignition switch to OFF position and disconnect INPUT SPEED SENSOR connector
Measure resistance between terminal 1 of the INPUT SPEED SENSOR harness connector and chassis ground
Specification : below 1 Ω
Does resistance indicate continuity ?
YES
Go to "INPUT SPEED INSPECTION" of the "Component Inspection" procedure
NO
Repair open in harness and Go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure
If circuit is OK, Go to "PCM Inspection" of the "Component Inspection"
