Component Location
General Description

If clutch S/W signal is ON, this signal is sent to ECM which monitors cltuch operation. That is used to monitor driving and shifting. ECM starts engine by controlling starter relay if clutch signal is ON at idle stop.

DTC Description

ECM sets DTC P0820 if neutral gear switch is ON for more than 4 sec. while clutch switch is on and engine rpm changes. In this case, Idle stop function is not performing by ECM.

Diagnostic Circuit Diagram
Monitor GDS Data
1.

Connect GDS to DLC(Data Link Cable).

2.

Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.

3.

Monitor "Neutral S/W" parameter on GDS

4.

Is the "Neutral S/W" parameter displayed correctly?

▶ Fault is intermittent caused by poor contact in the sensor’s and/or ECM’s connector or was repaired and ECM memory was not cleared. Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, ending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage. Repair or replace as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure

▶ Go to "Terminal & Connector Inspection" procedure.

Terminal and Connector Inspection
1.

Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness and terminals.

Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage.

2.

Thoroughly check connectors for looseness, poor connection, bending, corrosion, contamination, deterioration, or damage.

3.

Has a problem been found?

▶ Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

▶ Go to " Signal Circuit Inspection " procedure.

Signal Circuit Inspection
■ Check Open or Short in power circuit
1.

IG KEY "OFF".

2.

Disconnect Neutral S/W connector.

3.

IG KEY "ON"

4.

Measure the voltage between Signal terminal of Neutral S/W harness connector and chassis ground.

Specification : Approx. 11V

5.

Is the measured voltage within specification ?

▶ Go to "Component inspection" procedure.

▶ Repair Short to ground in signal circuit and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

Component Inspection
■ Check Neutral S/W
1.

IG KEY "OFF".

2.

Disconnect Neutral S/W connector.

3.

Check continuity between Neutral S/W component signal terminal and Ground terminal as shifting gear lever 2~3 times.

Specification : The measured resistance varies from below 1.0Ω(Continuity) to infinite Ω(Discontinuity) in accordance with gear shifting.

4.

Is the measured resistance within the specification?

▶ Many malfunctions in the electrical system are caused by poor harness(es) and terminals. Faults can also be caused by interference from other electrical systems, and mechanical or chemical damage. So, check poor connections and the related circuit between ECM and component thoroughly. Repair as necessary and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

▶ Substitute with a known - good Neutral S/W and check for proper operation.

If the problem is corrected, replace Neutral S/W and go to "Verification of Vehicle Repair" procedure.

Verification of Vehicle Repair

After a repair, it is essential to verifying that the fault has been corrected.

1.

Connect GDS and select "Diagnostic Trouble Codes(DTCs)" mode.

2.

Using GDS, Clear DTC.

3.

Operate the vehicle within DTC Enable conditions in General information.

4.

Are any DTCs present ?

▶ Go to the applicable troubleshooting procedure.

▶ System is performing to specification at this time.
