First of all check damage of harness and terminals : Check terminals for contact resistance, corrosion and deformation.
If battery is discharged without particular reason, Inspect the charging system circuit. The status of charging system would be simply inspected by charging system warning light on the cluster. (The charging system warning light is "ON" at IG KEY "ON" and is "OFF" at ENGINE "ON".) If the charging system warning lamp is not "ON" at IG KEY "ON" or is "ON" at ENGINE "ON", Inspect the charging system.
IG KEY "OFF", ENGINE "OFF"
Remove the connector from the alternator.
Measure the voltage of the alternator connector terminal.
Symptom | Inspection procedure
Case1 | ● Battery voltage is supplied at terminal "L". | ● Go to "Alternator output terminal (B+ terminal) inspection" procedure as below. |
Case2 | ● Battery voltage is NOT supplied on the terminal "L" at IG KEY "ON". | ● Repair the fuse which is related to IG KEY "ON" blown and charging lamp circuit. |
Case3 | ● Battery voltage is below 10 V on the terminal "L" at IG KEY "ON". | ● Check the terminal "L" using a circuit tester (Use light bulb type). (Fig.1) ● If tester lamp is NOT "ON", Repair the pre-excitation resistor and open in lamp circuit. |
IG KEY "OFF", ENGINE "OFF"
Inspect that B+ terminal is tightened or not.
Inspect alternator fusible link on the FAM.
Symptom | Inspection procedure
Case1 | ● In case that there is corrosion, deformation or loosen in the "B+" terminal, battery wiring and fusible link terminal. | ● Fasten the terminal after checking the terminal status. ● If terminal is damaged seriously, Replace the battery wiring or fusible link. ● If alternator fusible link is blown, Repair short to ground in B+ battery wiring circuit. |
Case2 | ● In case that there is no problem in the "B+" terminal, battery wiring and fusible link terminal. | ● Go to "Next inspection" procedure. |
Measure the voltage drop between alternator "B+" terminal and battery (+) terminal.
☞ Red (+) probe : Alternator "B" terminal
☞ Black (-) probe : Battery (+) terminal
■ Specification : Below 200 mV (Idle, Load is not applied)
Symptom | Inspection procedure
Case1 | ● In case that the voltage drop is high. (above 200 mV) | ● Charging system circuit is normal. ● If charging system circuit is normal but charging voltage, charging current is NOT abnormal, Replace the alternator. |
Case2 | ● Voltage drop is high. (above 200 mV) | ● Replace the battery wiring assembly after checking the connection condition. (corrosion, deformation or terminal is loosened). ● If battery is discharged or electric load is operated, voltage drop would be higher. (above 200 mV) ● First of all, Inspect battery condition and electric load operation. |
