Description

First of all check damage of harness and terminals : Check terminals for contact resistance, corrosion and deformation.

The test is to inspect the charging system (alternator) performance. Perform this test at a little discharging battery state.

Diagnostic Procedure
Measure the charging current
1.

IG KEY "OFF", ENGINE "ON"

2.

Check battery voltage using a multimeter.

3.

Install a ampere meter (Clamp type) to output cable of alternator.

4.

Turn on electric devices (head lamps, fog lamps, defogger, blower…etc)

5.

Measure the charging current and voltage after accelerating above 2,000 rpm.

☞ Charging voltage of alternator should be 13.0 ~ 14.5 V. (Fig.1)

☞ Charging current of alternator should be above 80 % of alternator capacity. (Fig.2)

Symptom

Inspection procedure

Case1

● Charging voltage is below 12.5 V and charging current is too low above 2,000 rpm.

● Inspect charging system circuit after checking tension and slip of the alternator belt.

● If charging current is abnormal although charging system circuit is normal, Replace the alternator.

Case2

● Charging voltage and current is normal above 2,000 rpm.

● Alternator is normal, Inspect the dark current.

☞ Go to "Dark current inspection".
