The PM value detected in the DPF is delivered to ECM by CAN communication and ECM checks the DPF for defects by the data.

The particulate matter (PM) in the exhaust gas is adsorbed onto the electrode.
The adsorbed particulate matter (PM) makes the conducting pathway.
As the adsrobed PM increases, the current amount which flows through the conducting pathway increases.
If the current is more than regular value, the sensor burns the adsorbed PM by heating.
DPF is checkable by comparing the measured value from PM sensor with the value from ECM.
