Description

First of all check damage of terminals : Check terminals for contact resistance, corrosion and deformation.

CMPS signal distinguishes crank angle and the cylinder which requires fuel injection in order to determine injection sequence and duration. Inspect CMPS signal because Impossible starting and Engine stalls would be caused by abnormal CMPS signal.

※In case of R-engine camshaft has multi teeth on the shaft. If CKPS is failed, Engine starting is possible because CMPS detects the piston position of the each cylinder which CKPS can't detect. ECM also saves last correlation between CKPS position and CMPS position in the ECM for stable starting. But engine stalls can be caused by poor connection and sudden abnormal CMPS signal input.

Diagnostic Procedure
CMPS circuit inspection
1.

IG S/W 'OFF', ENGINE 'OFF'.

2.

Disconnect CMPS connector.

3.

IG S/W 'ON'

4.

Measure the voltage of CMPS connector terminals.

Symptom

Inspection procedure

Case1

● Abnormal voltage at terminal '1', '2', '3'.

● DTC (P0340, P0341) related with CMPS would be displayed.

Case2

● Normal voltage at terminal '1', '2', '3'.

● Go to 'CMPS inspection' as below.

5.

IG S/W 'ON', ENGINE 'OFF'.

6.

Connect CMPS, CKPS connectors.

7.

Connect channel A to CMPS connector terminal '2'

8.

Connect channel B to CKPS connector terminal '2'.

9.

Monitor waveforms after ENGINE 'ON' or ENGINE cranking.

Symptom

Inspection procedure

Case1

● CMPS signal is NOT displayed.

● Inspect air gab and detecting tooth of camshaft after disconnecting CMPS.

● Monitor the waveform when metal material is put to CMPS sensing point (CMPS is connected harness) closely.

● If CMPS signal is NOT displayed, replace the CMPS.(Refer to Fig1)

Case2

● CMPS signal is displayed but reference point between CMPS signal and CKPS signal is abnormal.

● Go to 'Timing chain alignment inspection' procedure.
