The ESS function is the shorten word of Emergency Stop Signal function. When a vehicle is in a emergency stop condition, brake lamp blinks to inform emergency to the vehicle behind. While this function is operating, ESS brake lamp relay turns on and off the brake lamp.
The HECU monitors the ESS brake lamp relay(ESS relay) for a normal operation and if there is a open or short circuit in the relay, this DTC is set.

When ESS brake lamp relay drive OFF - If the monitor of ESS Brake Lamp Drive is ON, The failure is recognized. - If the monitor of ESS Brake Lamp Relay is different from BLS signal, The failure is recognized.
