Transfer oil should be inspected and refilled every 30 months or 37,500 miles.
Tightening torque
Oil drain pulg(A) :
39.2~58.8N.m (4.0~6.0kgf.m, 28.9~43.4lb-ft)
Filler pulg(B) :
39.2~58.8N.m (4.0~6.0kgf.m, 28.9~43.4lb-ft)
Transfer oil is not replaced in normal condition.But it shoud be replaced every 75,000 miles in severe driving conditions.
Severe driving conditions
Driving in dusty, rough roads
Drivng in mountains areas
Driving for patrol car, taxi, commercial car or vehicle towing
Driving over 170Km/h
Transfer case oil should be replaced if the transfer assembly has been submered in water.
It is not recommended to overhaul the transfer assembly because a special three-dimensional measuring instrument is required to determine the sizes of the transfer assembly spacers when disassembling and reassembling the transfer assembly. If putting wrong sized spacers in the transfer assembly, it may cause noise and vibration.So, if inner parts of the transfer assembly need to be replaced, the transfer assembly should be replaced with new one.
Disconnect the (-) terminal from the battery.
Lift up the vehicle.
Remove the front muffler. (Refer to "Intake And Exhaust System" in EM group)
Remove the propeller shaft bolts(A-4ea).
Tightening torque :
49.0~68.6N.m (5.0~7.0kgf.m, 36.2~50.6lb-ft)
Remove the right driveshaft (passanger side) from the transfer case. (Refer to "Drive shaft assembly" in DS group)
Install the propeller shaft to be near runout marking (Transfer assembly 1ea, propeller shaft 1ea) each other.
Remove up and down mounting bolt (A, B) after removing the transfer case bracket mounting bolt (C).
Remove the transfer case with pry-bar after supporting the transfer case with a jack.
Installation is the reverse of removal.
Be careful not to damage the O-ring (A). If the O-ring take damage, replace new one.
Smear involute splines (B) all covering with molybdenum type high pressure grease.
