Remove the timing chain "B".
(Refer to Timing System - "Timing Chain")
Remove the vacuum pump.
(Refer to Cylinder Head Assembly - "Vacuum Pump")
Inserting an assembly pin (B) into the intake camshaft scissors gear. (Standard only)
Remove the camshaft bearing caps (A).
Unfasten the bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown.
Mark the camshaft bearing caps to be able to reassemble in the original position and direction.
If the intake camshaft is removed when the assembly pin is not installed on the scissors gear of the intake camshaft, the main gear and scissors gear are distorted. In this case, assemble a pin on the intake camshaft with the main gear and scissors gear aligned and then install the camshaft.
Remove the intake and exhaust camshaft (A).
Remove the cam carrier (A).
Inspect the cam lobes.
Using a micrometer, measure the cam lobe height.
Cam height
Intake : 40.094 mm (1.5785 in)
Exhaust : 40.425 mm (1.5915 in)
If the cam lobe height is less than specification, replace the camshaft.
Inspect the camshaft journal clearance.
Clean the bearing caps and camshaft journals.
Place the camshafts on the cylinder head.
Lay a strip of plastigage across each of the camshaft journal.
Install the bearing caps and tighten the bolts with specified torque.
Tightening torque :
10.0 ~ 12.7 N.m (1.1 ~ 1.3 kgf.m, 8.0 ~ 9.4 lb-ft)
Do not turn the camshaft.
Remove the bearing caps.
Measure the plastigage at its widest point.
Bearing oil clearance :
0.040 ~ 0.074 mm (0.0016 ~ 0.0029 in)
If the oil clearance is greater than specification, replace the camshaft.
If the oil clearance is still greater than specification after camshaft replacement, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
Completely remove the plastigage.
Remove the camshafts.
Inspect the camshaft end play.
Install the camshafts.
Using a dial indicator, measure the end play while moving the camshaft back and forth.
Camshaft end play :
0.05 ~ 0.15 mm (0.0020 ~ 0.0059 in)
If the end play is greater than specification, replace the camshaft.
If the end play is still greater than specification after camshaft replacement, replace the bearing caps and cylinder head as a set.
Remove the camshafts.
Install the cam carrier (A) with a new gasket (B).
Apply sealant (LOCTITE 518, THREEBOND 1389 or equivalent) to the rectangular area at the rear of the cylinder head before assembling the cam carrier.
Remove the extruded sealant after assembling cam carrier. Otherwise it can cause oil leak from the cylinder head cover.
Install the camshafts (A) with the timing marks (B,C) aligned.
When assembling the camshafts, check the front and rear timing marks on the gears.
Install the camshaft bearing caps (A).
Remove the assembly pin (B). (Standard only)
Tightening torque :
10.8 ~ 12.7 N.m (1.1 ~ 1.3 kgf.m, 8.0 ~ 9.4 lb-ft)
Fasten the bearing cap bolts in the sequence shown.
Install the other parts in the reverse order of removal.
